Hungry for a Big-Ass Sandwich?
Portland couple opens newest sandwich cart sensation, “Big-Ass Sandwiches”Portland, OR.
Big-Ass Sandwiches is exactly what it sounds like: Delicious, ample sandwiches filled with home roasted meats and homemade ingredients, sure to squash big hunger in its tracks. This new Portland food cart is owned and operated by husband and wife Brian and Lisa Wood. Located downtown at 304 SE 2nd Ave, they serve up one-of-a-kind sandwiches to the people of Portland, who are already delightfully in the midst of what can only be described as an outright sandwich revival.
Brian and Lisa were both raised in the Northwest and have always dreamed of owning and operating their own business. After Lisa experienced her second layoff in two years due to media buyouts during the summer of 2009, she and Brian decided it was finally time to take the plunge to open and run their own business. They were confident they could make an amazing sandwich, but wanted to be sure they served something new and different that would set them apart from the many neighboring carts. That’s when it hit them: put the french fries ON the sandwich. Why give up ordering fries for lunch just because you’re eating on the go? That’s right, Big-Ass Sandwiches pile it on: Brian’s home roasted meats, homemade béchamel cheese sauce and home-cut, homemade fries, all grilled to perfection and piled into a locally baked ciabatta roll (made by Fleur De Lis Bakery). Vegetarians need not worry, The Woods know Portland loves their veggie fare; they offer a vegetarian sandwich featuring Field Roast deli slices.
Brian has worked in kitchens since he was a teenager, coming up through the ranks as a dishwasher, cook, server, sous chef and eventually head chef and manager in restaurants throughout the Northwest. He has been an integral part in building and opening notable Seattle restaurants The Celtic Bayou, The Belltown Pub & MacGuires Irish Pub. He worked several years with Salty’s Executive Chef Steve Brendlinger and famed Seattle restaurateur Mick McHugh. Lisa has spent the past 15 years in the Northwest broadcasting and music industries as a radio DJ, Promotions Director & music programmer. She’s worked for record labels, media giants and listener-supported media. Brian and Lisa are excited to make a living contributing to their community, friends and families while doing what they love.
They’ll also further innovate the cart concept by taking favorite sandwich ideas and requests from the local community, both online and at the cart. Many will be rotated through as specials with the best sellers eventually winning a permanent spot on the menu. The name may be a bit tongue-in-cheek, but the food at Big-Ass Sandwiches is in very good taste indeed.
